The Old School Centre is where it all started 20 years ago, running courses for up to 30 children. The Old School is in the South Pennine town of Todmorden, with brilliant transport links, fascinating local history and amazing natural resources.

One of the highlights of a visit to The Old School is a trip up to Orchan Rocks; a pile of natural boulders that is perfect for children to challenge themselves by seeing which of the small holes they can wriggle through. We also have an ‘Alien Conspiracy’ session taking place on the moors above the centre. These activity sessions mean that The Old School Centre, of all three centres, offers the most real ‘outdoor pursuits’ using natural resources. The Old School Centre, although now able to accommodate 75 children, is the smallest of the three Robinwood Centres, so has a really homely and friendly feel.

From the minute they arrive to the minute they leave, the children are made to feel that the staff team know them individually. There’s no bigger smile than that on a child when they have climbed to the top of the ‘Big One’ or squeezed through a narrow passageway, when their initial thoughts were ‘No way!’ The message for the children throughout their stay is that they can achieve. With the help and support of their friends and the Robinwood team, they all do and we do our utmost to highlight all their individual achievements.

The Old School has outstanding indoor provision for challenging high activities such as Trapeze, Crate Challenge and Climbing. We have also brought the archery range inside, so that this session can be enjoyed in the warmth and undercover whatever the weather.

At The Old School centre we generally spend a little bit longer on the sessions up on the moors, experiencing the real outdoors. Alien Conspiracy is a new themed problem solving session which takes place high above the centre. The children will be guided by instructions from a tablet computer and use a GPS to find certain sites. This session looks to develop teamwork and problem solving skills, whilst capturing the imagination of the children through the challenges involved and the story telling of the group leaders. Whichever centre you visit, though, we can guarantee a really packed and varied activity programme running throughout the course.

The teachers are well looked after too at The Old School, with en-suite rooms located close to the children and a new retro-styled lounge area where teachers can relax in the evening, whilst Robinwood staff supervise the children. We also provide some additional treats to help make your stay comfortable. Our welcoming support staff ensure that children and teachers are comfortable and well fed and any particular needs are easily catered for.

Finding the Old School Activity Centre

The Old School is situated on Jumps Road, just off the A646 Burnley Road about a mile and a half north of Todmorden town centre.

From Todmorden, take the A646 heading towards Burnley. You will pass Centre Vale Park and Todmorden High School on your left. Half a mile after passing Todmorden High School you will see a railway viaduct on your right. Jumps Road is a right turn at this point.

From Burnley, take the A646 towards Todmorden. About half a mile after passing through the village of Cornholme you will pass “The Staff of Life” public house on the left hand side. About half a mile after the Staff of Life you will see a railway viaduct on the left hand side. Jumps Road is a left turn at this point.

Jumps Road goes under an arch of the railway viaduct and then bends round to the right. Robinwood Activity Centre is on the left hand side of Jumps Road 100m after going under the railway viaduct. Jumps Road itself is very narrow and coaches should not attempt to negotiate it. There is limited car parking space at Robinwood and guests with cars may drive up Jumps Road to the centre.

What Schools say about the Old School

We really appreciate all the recommendations we get from schools who have visited Robinwood and the number of schools who come for the first time as a result of recommendations from friends and colleagues. We are constantly updating the comments from schools who have recently attended a Robinwood Course. The schools that attend come from areas of the Midlands, throughout the North of England and up into Scotland. But don’t just take our word for it, See what they have to say about robinwood. "Alien Conspiracy and Bouldering are new activities to us as staff (having been at Dobroyd previously) They were great; it was nice to be outdoors/cold but just long enough. Use of space eg. Trapeze/Crate Challenge sharing a room is genius."
